RefreshFinasteride is used to treat men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and male pattern hair loss, also called androgenetic alopecia. BPH is caused by an enlarged prostate. Men with BPH usually have difficulty urinating, a decreased flow of urination, hesitation at the beginning of urination, and a need to get up at night to urinate. Finasteride will make these symptoms less severe and reduce the chance that prostate surgery will be needed. It may be used alone or in combination with other medicines such as an alpha-blocker to treat BPH. For men with hair loss, finasteride will increase the number of scalp hairs but will not increase the amount of body hair.
Finasteride blocks the action of an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme changes testosterone to another hormone that causes the prostate to grow or hair loss in males. It will increase testosterone levels in the body, which decreases prostate size and increases hair growth on the scalp. The effect of finasteride on the prostate and scalp will only last as long as the medicine is taken. When it is stopped, the prostate begins to grow again and the hair will be lost.

A recent study published in theJournal of Clinical Endocrinology(JACE) showed that finasteride (Proscar®, Finpecia®, Propecia®) is a good oral drug for benign prostatic hyperplasia. Proscar is marketed for the treatment of male pattern hair loss. Propecia (finasteride) was the first drug approved in the United States for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). BPH is the most common form of hair loss in men, and is a condition that occurs in men of all ages.
Finasteride was first approved for the treatment of male pattern hair loss in 1992 and was initially used as a treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia. In 1997, the FDA approved the first finasteride for the treatment of male pattern hair loss, but approved no other treatment for male pattern hair loss.
As the name implies, Propecia is a treatment for male pattern hair loss. The drug is used to promote hair growth and prevent further hair loss from occurring in men with hair loss. This drug can be used in men with a high risk of prostate cancer and other prostate-related conditions. If you have male pattern hair loss, talk to your doctor about what to do.
It is important to understand that Propecia is not approved for the treatment of hair loss in men. The drug was originally intended to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) but was later approved by the FDA for the treatment of BPH. Propecia is approved for the treatment of hair loss in men of all ages and men over the age of 18, but not for the treatment of prostate cancer.
There are currently 1 in 100 men with BPH who have not received finasteride therapy.
Finasteride works by preventing the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that causes hair loss and may also lead to prostate cancer in some men.
In clinical studies, finasteride was found to be effective in reducing DHT levels in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia. DHT is a form of the hormone that causes hair follicles to shrink, eventually leading to hair loss. DHT is a type of hormone called an endocannabinoid, or endocannabinoid. The body releases an endocannabinoid called endocannabinoid 3.5-5.6. In clinical studies, the use of finasteride resulted in a statistically significant increase in prostate volume, prostate-specific antigen (PSA), and prostate-specific antigen (PSA/PSA) concentrations in patients with and without prostate cancer.
When finasteride is used to treat male pattern hair loss, the results are generally seen within 1 to 2 months. However, for people over the age of 18, the effect of finasteride treatment can be expected within 4 to 6 months. The effects of finasteride can last up to 3 to 6 months, and this is more than the length of time that finasteride is used.
Finasteride works by blocking the conversion of testosterone to the endocannabinoid 3.5-5.6, which leads to a decrease in prostate size and a decrease in prostate volume. This decrease in prostate volume is a result of the reduction in prostate-specific antigen, which indicates a reduction in prostate volume.

In clinical studies, finasteride was found to be effective in reducing DHT levels in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The use of finasteride is also effective in men with a higher risk of prostate cancer.
Finasteride is also used in men with male pattern hair loss to treat male pattern hair loss. A showed that finasteride treatment resulted in a statistically significant increase in prostate volume, prostate-specific antigen (PSA), and prostate-specific antigen (PSA/PSA) concentrations.
If you have male pattern hair loss, talk to your doctor about how you can take your finasteride to help promote hair growth. The drug can be taken orally or intravenously, depending on the condition you are treating.
The drug can also be used in combination with other medications to treat male pattern hair loss, such as finasteride, to help prevent further hair loss from occurring in men with hair loss.
Finasteride (the generic name of the drug) is used to treat hair loss in men. It is a synthetic version of 5-alpha-reductase. Finasteride works by preventing the re- testosterone production, which lowers your hair loss hormone levels. This helps to slow down and stop hair loss and even prevent further hair loss. In women, it’s also used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or the blockage of urine flow.
Common side effects include:
Finasteride is not recommended for use in women or children. Inform your doctor if you have any problems with your kidneys or liver. If you are a man or a child with an enlarged prostate, your doctor may use a prostaglandin analog (such asProscar®) or a diuretic (such asDulcolAction®). These medications should only be taken as prescribed by a doctor and are only intended to treat symptoms.
Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any other medications or have any medical conditions, especially to NYU Langone Medical School, if you have any liver problems, or if you have any kidney problems. Finasteride can cause serious side effects. Let your doctor know if you have any kidney problems since you begin taking this medication. Your dosage may need to be adjusted, and your doctor may need to change the dose or monitor you more closely for side effects.
Common side effects of this medication are:
Less common, but serious, side effects may be seen after stopping the medication. These side effects are usually temporary and may go away on their own after a few days if untreated. If you experience any of these symptoms while taking this medication, stop taking Finasteride and contact your doctor.
Less serious, but less common, side effects are sexual dysfunction (sex drive), but may improve with time. If you have any sexual problems, talk to your doctor.
Inform your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms during your treatment:
These are not all that everyone experiences. For more details about side effects, see the sections entitled "How to Treat Hair Loss with Finasteride" and "FAQs" in the manufacturer's pamphlet.
I have been trying to conceive for the last 4 yrs and had no luck. However, I was diagnosed with androgenetic alopecia and it has left me with some problems.
I was prescribed finasteride and it worked for about 6 months. However, I have had no problems since, and I have gone through with the treatment. But I don’t think it has helped and I still have a problem. I don’t have any other issues as far as the side effects of this medicine. I’ve tried other treatments but no improvement.
My doctor has prescribed Propecia and I have been struggling to conceive for about 3 months now and I don’t think Propecia has worked for me. I’m going to try Propecia again and see if that helps.
I’m not a woman and am a woman who wants to have a baby. I have been taking Propecia for 5 months now. I have never been diagnosed and have not taken Propecia. I am not allergic to finasteride and am not taking any other medicines. I am only using Propecia to help to get pregnant and I am not going to use this medication for anything other than that.
My doctor has advised me that I have a condition called “problems” that can affect my fertility. It is called male pattern baldness and is not just about the male body. There are some things that cause the hair to be shorter and thinning.
Propecia is a very effective treatment and is one of the best medicines to have for male pattern baldness. However, it is not the only hair loss treatment that has helped me to conceive. I have also taken Finasteride and both of them have worked very well for me.
There are some side effects that I had and they were due to the Propecia. The side effects were not as bad as I would have expected.
My doctor prescribed me Finasteride and it helped my hair to grow back. My fertility has also been improving and I am not taking any other medicines and am on a healthy pregnancy.
My fertility has been improving and I am not taking any other medicines and am trying to conceive.
I am now thinking about the side effects and if I do get better, I will give Propecia to my partner and she will take care of the rest.
Please be patient and be informed if there are any side effects that you have and that you want to try and see.
Thanks.
